Oxford Initiative—War & Peace Series—2024:

Special Focus on Conflict Journalism | Oxford-Cairo-Belfast

1 - 5 September Symposium at Wadham College, Oxford

6 - 11 September fieldwork in Egypt or Northern Ireland

Our global landscape is dominated by wars and conflict, brutally revealing human tragedy, devastation, and desperation. How do we find hope in successful peacebuilding endeavors, strategic moral diplomacy, and the resilience of the human spirit?

Join us for an intensive week in Oxford with our faculty, project partners, and experienced practitioners as we explore the roles and agency of women in war and peace—how they participate in their conflicts and tell their storiesThis workshop particularly benefits trauma-informed fieldwork and working with vulnerable populations in conflict-prone areas. Workshop participants receive our GWNP Duty of Care training certificate in trauma-sensitive narrative and interviewing techniques in partnership with Resonate Joy trauma specialists. Our Duty of Care Training is required before interviewing women for the Global Women’s Narratives Project.

The daily schedule in Oxford is generally two morning sessions from 9:00 am to 12:15 pm, a long midday break, then an afternoon session from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm with one half-day free to tour Oxford, and one evening session. Previous schedules are available on the 2022 and 2023 workshop pages.

Immediately following the Oxford portion, there will be two separate opportunities to join small GWNP narrative teams to interview women in Belfast/Derry or Cairo. Acceptance as a delegate for the Oxford workshop does not guarantee placement on a fieldwork team. Oxford GWNP graduate student editors and partners receive first consideration, after which our 2024 workshop delegates will be considered for the remaining openings in the order applications are received. We can let you know immediately if travel team spaces remain open. After completing the training in September, delegates are considered part of our community and are encouraged to join any future GWNP team fieldwork. Our plans for Spring and Summer 2025 will focus on partnerships in Cairo, Egypt, and Accra, Ghana.

Resonate Joy Nonprofit, an arm of the Optimum Joy private practice in Chicago, IL, USA, partners with the Global Women’s Narratives Project to provide trauma-informed training and therapeutic support. Trauma specialists lead several sessions in our Oxford training and will be joining the work in Northern Ireland and Cairo, Egypt, in September.
